EASTER HOMEWORK PART ONE

ANSWER THE EXAM QUESTION 1a)

"Describe and evaluate how your CREATIVE skills have developed from AS to A2."

HOW TO PLAN IDEAS FOR AN ESSAY ON CREATIVITY

DON'T ask yourself the question, " How have I become more creative during my A level course?“ Ask yourself, "Have I become more creative?“ If you answer the second question, then you will evaluate your progress much more thoroughly.

F
or example, the pros and cons of using GarageBand might be:
Pros

Allows me to create my own thriller soundtrack.
It's an easy to use programme with a pre-existing set of 'sounds'.
I can use
i-tunes to format my soundtrack and then import to imovie.
The process is quick and straight-forward.
But the Cons could include

The samples available are limited.
I can't fundamentally change the samples.
My soundtrack sounds like a lot of other student's work

Essay Guide for Q1a

Q1a ESSAY GUIDE FOR: "Describe and evaluate how your skills have developed over time in terms of using conventions from real media texts."
(25 marks)

Refer to Pete Fraser's blog for guidance on answering Q1a

SHORT INTRO FOLLOWED BY

·       AS What did I watch
·       AS The technique (camerawork, editing, mise-en-scence…)
·       AS How I used the convention in my own production
·       AS what was good / bad about it? (focus on the bad!!)
·       A2 What did I watch
·       A2 The technique (camerawork, editing, mise-en-scence…)
·       A2 How I used the convention in my own production. SPECIFIC EXAMPLES
·       EVALUATE: My skills have improved by A2 because….
At AS I produced a 2 minute opening to a film from the psychological thriller genre, whereas at A2 I produced a music video from the alternative genre.

At AS I watched ‘The Blair Witch Project’ film and liked the handheld effect of the camera work because it shows the protagonist’s point of view which makes the audience feel a sense of immediacy; they are involved in the narrative and feel empathy with the characters.  I used this convention in my film when I shot a high angle shot of the duvet cover pulling back by itself which was effective because we made the audience feel like they were watching a point-of-view shot of our aparition, creating atmospheric suspense, a convention of the psychological thriller narrative.  Likewise, at A2 I watched ‘Skirts’ by ‘The Other Tribe’ in which I saw lots of tracking shots.  I wanted to make our audience feel the tension and anticipation created by this camerawork, so therefore I also used tracking shots when our artist is skipping through the fields and… This made our audience feel… My skills have improved by A2 because..

Work for Tuesday 22nd Jan p1&2

Hi all,

Ms Scott is on a trip today, so please use lesson time p1&2 to catch up on work. You have an essay due in plus audience research which you could work on (see my previous post below).

You can also finish your digipak coursework task (upload your design and your research)

You could make a start on your magazine advert coursework: Look at the magazine adverts you were asked to bring in on Friday (lesson cancelled due to snow day..)

Good luck. Use your time wisely! I'll see you p3&4.

Magazine Advert Work
1) Look at the examples of magazine adverts. What are the conventions? Make a list

2) Annotate your magazine adverts. How does the advert use colour, images, font, text symbolically?

When analysing, think about:

MESSAGES
What kinds of messages do we receive from the advert?
How do these messages effect our buying choices?
How do these messages effect our perception of the world around us?
What is the ad trying to sell? (Other than the music itself, what ideas or messages is the ad trying to sell? What is the subtext? Are there any stereotypical ideas and/or subliminal messages that can you identify?

TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is the target audience? Explain using specific demographics and psychographics.
Can you identify any emotional appeals in the ad? (romance, humour, guilt, patriotism, sympathy, anxiety, anger, envy, loneliness, desire to escape etc.)
In what ways does this advert effect our ideas, attitudes or beliefs? (Example: alcohol = fun / thin = beautiful)
Are these attitudes created by advert or are they existing attitudes reinforced or made acceptable by the advert?
How does the advert catch your eye? Why did you choose this advert? What caught your attention long enough to stop and look at it?
How would you rate the overall effectiveness of the advert for its target audience? Explain your rating
